Dear Father

I believe that since your last letter, you and everyone else are fine and in good health.
Minoru is also in good spirits, but the other day I was hit in the right shoulder by an enemy bullet from the defeated and scattered troops, and I am now being cared for very well. The wound is shallow so there is no need for worry.
What follows is a verse that I have created. Although it is not very good, I am sending it to you.
Being the season of the year, please do look after your health. Sincerely yours,

The soldier values his good name,
and blooms as the wild-cherry tree blossoms of Japan,
and scatters to become a deity of the shrine at Kudan.

I respectful look up at Japan that prospers forever;
your blessings are exceedingly precious.

While tens of thousands of enemies may approach Japan,
through all the ages, I am a soul of Japan that is undaunted.

From above the waves of the China Sea, I think of my father.
