Guide to Outer GardenLarge Granite Lanterns

During the Seinan War, General Kuroda Kiyotaka assembled a force in Nagasaki called the “Second Standalone Brigade,” which arrived at Kumamoto Castle on April 15, 1877, sparking a fierce battle with the rebel forces of Saigo Takamori.
Three years later, these magnificent giant granite lanterns carved with inscriptions were donated by the Second Standalone Brigade in memory of the fallen.
