On February 25, 1919, the Tanaka Detachment (72nd Infantry Regiment) led by Major Commander Tanaka Katsusuke engaged in combat in Siberia.
Beset by enemies outnumbering them many tens of times, nearly all members of the detachment died. This monument formerly stood along Ushigafuchi Moat in Kudanshita, but it was moved to its current location in 1996 due to the construction of the National Showa Memorial Museum.
