Yasukuni Jinja

Guide to Outer GardenIrei No Izumi (Soul-Comforting Spring)

This installation was donated by the international service club Tokyo Kiwanis in 1967 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Meiji era. It is dedicated to the memory of the soldiers who took their final breaths on the unfamiliar soil of distant battlefields, begging their mothers for water.
The sculpture is an abstract representation of a loving mother tenderly pouring pure water.
