More than 2,466,000 divinities who lost their lives from the end of the Tokugawa shogunate to the Greater East Asian War (World War II) are enshrined as deities here.
The magnificent structure was built in 1872 and designed by the architect Ito Heizaemon.
Major renovations were conducted from 1986 to 1989.
