Guide to Inner GardenMemorial Statues Honoring Horses, Carrier Pigeons, and Dogs

These statues were erected by veterans’ associations and worshippers to commemorate the warhorses, war dogs, and carrier pigeons that took part in wars alongside soldiers.
The horse statue was produced by Ito Kunio, and the dog statue by Ichihashi Toshio. The statue of a pigeon spreading its wings atop a globe represents prayers for world peace.
The warhorses that lost their lives are said to have numbered 200,000 in the Greater East Asian War alone. Even after the end of the war, the warhorses and war dogs sent overseas were not able to return home alive.
