Guide to Inner GardenMemorial Statue of War Widow with Children

This statue is intended to represent a mother who lost her husband to war and is working hard to survive with her three children. It was constructed in 1974 by the young and middle-aged division of the Japan War-Bereaved Families Association out of gratitude to their mothers who did such a fine job of raising them in the face of terrible hardship after the war.
The inscription reads, “I owe my existence to my strong, strict, and gentle mother. Thank you, Mother. May our sorrow never be repeated.”
It is the work of the sculptor Miyamoto Takashi.
