Guide to Inner GardenMonument to the Kempeitai Military Police

The Kempeitai were responsible for maintaining order within the military as well as policing of occupied territories during the war. They also risked their lives to protect the shrine buildings during the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 and the firebombing of Tokyo in 1945. This monument was dedicated in 1969 by the National Kempeitai Veterans’ Association to commemorate the Kempeitai members who died due to war.
